Google Talk Translation Bots

Google announced they introduced a couple of translation bots to their chat software Google Talk. For instance, invite en2zh@bot.talk.google.com, open a chat with it, and then whenever you type something in English, the bot will repeat the same in Chinese (say e.g. “hello” and the bot correctly translates to “你好”). This feature might come in handy in group chat when you talk to someone with another native language.

Besides en2zh, the other supported language pairs are, according to Google: ar2en, bg2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, es2en, fi2en, fr2de, fr2en, hi2en, hr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, uk2en, ur2en, zh2en. Always append @bot.talk.google.com to get the bot address.

Tip: To quickly launch Google Talk without any installation, you can bookmark talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/popout in Firefox. Now go to your bookmark properties by right-clicking the bookmark. In the keyword field enter “talk” (no quotes). Next time, you can just enter “talk” into the browser address bar to launch the chat.

Nokia announces N97 Possible iPhone Killer

The N97 might be one of the most exciting devices Nokia has launched in a long time and it seems like Nokia is hell-bent on taking on HTC, Apple, Sony Ericsson et al. The handset that's just been announced doesn't look anything like earlier leaks have suggested and it's easily the most exciting device Nokia has announced this year.
The design of the N97 might bring your thoughts to the HTC TyTN II as it shares the same slide out keyboard and tiltable display, but the similarities end there. The fascia doesn't look that different from the iPhone, albeit in white and having three buttons instead of a single one.

The specifications are truly awe inspiring, starting off with a 3.5in touch screen with 640x360 (16:9) resolution and haptic feedback, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, a 5Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash, WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, HSDPA, 32GB of built in flash memory, a microSD card slot, FM-radio, FM-transmitter (for sending music from the phone to a radio tuner) and a 3.5mm headphone jack which doubles up as TV-out socket.

The keyboard doesn't look like the best we've seen, but considering that the N97 measures 117.2x55.3x15.9mm (HxWxD) it's not a bad feat incorporating a keyboard, especially when you consider that the iPhone 3G measures 115.5x62.1x12.3mm (HxWxD) which actually makes the N97 narrower, if somewhat taller and thicker. The N97 weighs 150g which is a bit on the heavy side, although the iPhone 3G comes in at 133g, so again, not a huge difference.

Nokia claims the battery is good for 1.5 days of music playback. The N97 uses the S60 5th edition OS which is the same as the Nokia 5800, but with some N-series tweaks which adds extra functionality. The N97 also supports various on-screen keyboards and handwriting recognition. It also supports Nokia maps and the new N-Gage platform.

The bad news? Well, Nokia is going to charge ?550 plus VAT for the N97 and it won't be out until sometime in the first half of next year, so it seems like Nokia still have some work to do. Despite this, it looks like Nokia has an amazing handset with the N97 if it's as good as it looks on paper.

You can find the press release here and some more details here

Just Add Water to Charge Your Cell Phone

How many times have we heard of water damaging a cell phone or PDA? Someone accidentally spilled some water on it, dropped it in the sink, or maybe pushed someone in the pool while it was still in their pocket. Sometimes you can save your wet cell or PDA, but what if instead of ruining our products, water will power them! Samsung is developing a cell phone battery that its fuel cells will run on Water. Sounds pretty cool right? The water combined with the cell phone metal interior will create Hydrogen gas, which will then generate energy when it reacts with Oxygen. This process supposedly generates enough energy to power your cell phone for 10 hours…kind of amazing. The main problem is that the hydrogen cells would have to be replaced once or twice a week. While still working on it, they are attempting to develop it so all you would have to do is just add water to charge your cell phone. Don’t go rushing to the store looking for these, for they aren’t supposed to be available until 2010 or so.

Worlds First USB 3.0 Host Controller Reaches 165Mb/s

Manufacturers are already gearing up for SuperSpeed USB with NEC being the first to announce the first USB 3.0 host controller, which is about one of the few silicon products that will guarantee instant success in this economy. NEC Electronics expects external hard drives, SSDs, flash drives and of course the computers themselves will be the first to receive the SuperSpeed USB upgrade.

A demo by Seagate at CES 2009 has already shown that even a prototype can reach upwards of 165MB/s which in perspective is almost 5 times faster than the fastest USB hard drive or flash drive. If USB 2.0 chip optimization history is any indication, we are looking at USB 3.0 hitting top speed in two years.

Designated µPD720200, the world's first xHCI-compliant host silicon will also be backward compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. Samples of the chips will become available in June 2009 at $15 USD, along with free Windows drivers. NEC anticipates monthly production to reach one million units by September of this year, and rapid adoption in second half of 2010.

......................................................................................................................................

My Personal Oppinion : 165Mb/s is pretty fast you know, Also with the fixed windows 7 system, Im thinking it could easily double that once they perfect it all.

AddToRun Adds Aliases to the Windows Run Box

Portable utility AddToRun adds custom aliases to more easily launch applications using the Windows run box.

Using the utility is fairly self-explanatory—simply select an application, assign a custom alias, and use the Add button to add the alias to the registry. Once you've done this, you can use the alias in the Windows box to launch the application, or if you are using Windows Vista it will also show up at the top of the start menu search results—a very useful feature. Readers using Windows Vista should note that you need to run the application as administrator for it to work properly.

AddToRun is free and open source, available for Windows only.

CrossLoop Remotely Controls Any Windows or Mac PC

Free remote desktop application CrossLoop—which we've mentioned once or twiced before—has just released a Mac version, which means simple, cross-platform remote support and file sharing for your friends and family.

The benefit of CrossLoop has always been that it's very easy to set up and use, even for beginners, making it an ideal tool for those of us who've been unofficially designated as tech support for our loved ones. Just install (on both your computer and the computer you want to control), sign up for accounts, and you'll be up and sharing screens in no time once you swap the automatically generated access code. I don't see any new options (screen sharing and file sharing have always been CrossLoop's brread and butter), but the addition of Mac support should open a lot of new doors for helping out across platforms. CrossLoop is a free download, Windows and Mac only.

Nimi Adds Visual Effects and Eye Candy to Windows

If you've waited out Vista and you're in no hurry to jump into testing Windows 7, Nimi is a fun little program for adding swanky visual effects to Windows XP.

Borrowing heavily from the special effects found in the Mac OS X system and the Compiz effects in Linux, Nimi has a lot to add to your desktop. You can implement shadows and transparency, tweak windows to snap to screen edges or maximize when tapped against them. Application windows can also be tweaked with Jello-like wiggles, bouncing, or other real world motions. There are dozens of tweaks included in the program; conveniently, when you select one that will interfere with another, the secondary option is grayed out to prevent conflicts. Nimi ran without hangups or any lag on our test machine, but make sure to turn off the settings you've activated before shutting down Nimi. That's because closing the application without doing so leaves some of the effects hanging around. Nimi is freeware, Windows only.

Install a Complete Open Source Software Suite in Five Minutes (Windows, Mac)

When you get a new computer, the first thing you probably do is try to find and install all the software you used to use on your old computer. That usually means a lot of mouse clicks and waiting, but there is, of course, an easier way.

If you happen to be an open-source fanatic running Windows, WinLibre will greatly simplify the task of outfitting your new computer with a comprehensive software suite that covers office productivity, graphics design, security, and the Internet.

The slim 151 MB WinLibre package contains software like OpenOffice, Gimp, Firefox, and VideoLan along with 16 other handy utilities. Almost any commonly used open source software you can think of is already pre-packaged.

If you want to cherry-pick your downloads, there's also a small, 600 KB downloader that lets you customize your installation. This is especially useful if you've already installed some of the software in the complete WinLibre package.

After that, it's just a one-click installation, and you'll be ready to go. The actual amount of time you focus on installing software is probably less than five minutes.

For Mac users, MacLibre is the corresponding package to WinLibre you'll want to download. It contains a similar set of software that works on Macs.

Doodle 4 Google

Welcome to Doodle 4 Google, a competition where we invite K-12 students to play around with our homepage logo and see what new designs they come up with. This year we're inviting U.S. kids to join in the doodling fun, around the intriguing theme "What I Wish for the World."

Both our country and the world are undergoing significant change. At Google we believe in thinking big, and dreaming big, and we can't think of anything more important than encouraging students to do the same.
